Adventures in Moominland at the Southbank

Over the Easter break the kids and I went to the Southbank and experienced the immersive exhibition 'Adventures in Moominland'. We booked this via the Southbank website which offers timed tickets as only small groups can enter each part of the exhibition at a time. The exhibition is open to all but recommended for 7 years and older and my nearly 6 year old was wary and grabbed my hand at one point when we were 'in the forest' but on the whole found the experience enchanting. He was so taken in by the amazing theming of each space which we entered and explored that about half way round and in the depths of the Southbank Centre he explained "we are by the sea".

Our guide, accompanied by a voice over by Sandi Toksvig, used the language and description of Tove Jansson, the Finnish author of the Moomin books to create the atmosphere of each of these unique spaces from Janssons's artist studio to the deepest, darkest starry wood where her creepier characters hang out, all just out of reach and sight except in the small sketches and paintings in light boxes carefully included with each space.

This was quite an elusive quest for those Moomins who will always be most alive in the wonderful words and illustrations of Tove Jansson but this immersive experience felt like it brought us far closer to both the world of the Moominvalley and their creator. A recommended experience that takes about 50 minutes and will be at the Southbank Centre until 20th August 2017.
