Our FanDaze Party Adventures...

Review of FanDaze

On a very warm and sunny 2nd June evening the kids and I went to the FanDaze Inaugural party at Disneyland Paris. This was a new event and was held from 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. in the Studio Park. I never thought initially that I would bring the kids to the party and I wasn't sure how they would cope with a very late night and an event which was mainly seemed geared towards adult fans but we had an amazing evening! The event begun as we walked through the Studio building to the sound of a fabulous singer and some very jazzy Disney songs.

The program of events included shows and many many meet and greets with rare Disney characters. I knew as I was taking the kids that really the timetable of events for the evening would be determined by them and as I didn't know how how late they would feel able to stay up I decided we would see each show as early as possible. We went over to the main stage in the Production Courtyard to watch the Opening Ceremony which included a welcome from the President of EuroDisney, Catherine Powell.

We multi-tasked and whilst we watched the ceremony we also queued for our first meet and greet, Duffy and ShellieMay. This was an important photo for us to get as my son was Disney bounding as Oswald clutching his Duffy teddy in an Oswald costume too and my daughter was bounding as ShellieMay in a matching outfit to her ShellieMay teddy. There aren't many events which spur me to get out a sewing machine but FanDaze definitely did!

We then moved onto watch the very first 'Oh My Ortensia' show, the very first time that Ortensia had been seen as a character in a DisneyPark. The setting of the show was in the Hollywood Boulevard, absolutely perfect for the introduction the girlfriend of Oswald, the original 1920s Disney character. The music and dancing in the show was amazing and this vintage Disney fan thought it was just perfect!

After the show we met some further characters, Clara Cluck and then Horace Horsecollar and Clarabelle Cow, these were great fun and we got some lovely photos for our PhotoPass. By 9 p.m. it was time for the very first DuckTales parade through the studios. There was plenty of opportunity to interact with the dancers who encouraged us all to 'shake a tail feather' along to the infectious music in a variety of sequenced warm ups and dances. I can see this being a successful parade if rolled out into the park schedule- so much work had gone into the music and choreography.

Next we went to a very special Stitch Live! The animated show had some special live guests, Pleakley and Jumba. This was my son's highlight as he was was chosen to take part, being a monkey and posing for a photo onscreen with Pleakley and Jumba. At the end of the show everyone got the opportunity for a quick pic with the special guests.

We were then in the right place for the next entertainment, 'Max in Concert' which was on a impressive stage erected in the Production Courtyard.  This show was all singing and dancing with lots of fireworks, bubbles and projections on the Tower of Terror thrown into the mix- it looked good and was great fun using classic Disney songs. This worked very well on the large stage by having characters and dancing in the middle and to either side so no one missed out on the action.

After this show we went to Oswald's Sing-Along Challenge in the Animagique theatre. I entered the raffle to sing 'Supercalifragalistic' knowing that singing really isn't my thing so was relieved that I wasn't chosen! My daughter, on the other hand, was desperate to be picked and really wanted to sing 'Be Our Guest'! The show included some great dancing and appearances from Oswald and Ortensia. There were sing along songs with the words on a large screen and then four guests were chosen to sing four songs from the raffle. My daughter seemed disappointed to not be the one leaving the theatre with the big trophy and wanted to do it all again but I persuaded her that we would spend the end of our evening seeing a few more characters.

As we wandered around the Studios we could see this would be challenging as most of the queues were long and already closed. This was a criticism I would share, if we had had our heart set on seeing particular characters we might have been disappointed. We found Lady YaYa from the Three Caballeros with a small queue and then walked around the back of the studios and managed to be the last people to see Honey Lemon from Big Hero Six and then our evening was topped off by my son managing to meet Wilber Robinson from his favourite film, Meet The Robinsons, who was casually meeting fans in the street along with other characters from the film.

Unfortunately I could see that the kids were starting to get tired and that we weren't likely to make it to the parade at the end and so we watched the amazing Farewell Parade back in the hotel room via the magic of YouTube. It is still possible to watch the shows from the evening on the Disneyland Paris YouTube channel. It had been a brilliant night and it had worked out far better than I could have hoped with the kids. By having later mornings during the trip and staying up a bit later they wwre stills, in essence, on UK time snd this helped. We saw all the amazing shows on offer and chose the shortest queues possible to join. I simply couldn't believe how quickly the evening went!
